<p>The move is in response to declining auto sales and affects 46,000 union workers at Chrysler&#8217;s plants, which now will not re-open until January 19th. It is intended to allow Chrysler to move excess inventory lodged at its dealerships.</p>
<p>While Ford has said that it is not in as dire straits as Chrysler and GM, it also announced that it would be lengthening its factories&#8217; holiday season this year, to three weeks.</p>
